Coverage
The river is the boundary, not the city limit
Guwahati has been policed as a commissionerate since the start of 2015, and unlike many cities it does not sit alongside a rural force of its own. The commissionerate covers the whole of Kamrup Metropolitan district, so there is no separate rural superintendent inside it to appeal to. Escalation runs from the officer in charge of a station to an assistant commissioner, then a deputy commissioner for one of the east, central or west police districts, then a joint commissioner, then the Commissioner of Police.
What catches people out is where that district ends. Places that feel semi-rural are inside it: Sonapur, Chandrapur and Azara are all Kamrup Metropolitan, as is the airport area at Borjhar. Meanwhile places that carry the city's own name are not. Amingaon, North Guwahati and Changsari lie across the Brahmaputra in Kamrup Rural, a different district under a superintendent based at Amingaon. A complaint about an address in North Guwahati does not belong to the Guwahati commissionerate at all, which is as counter-intuitive as jurisdiction gets.
One recent change is worth checking before you file anything. In August 2026 the state ordered a new police station at Kahilipara, carved out of Dispur and taking in Odalbakra, Bhagaduttapur and parts of the Fatasil and Lokhra stretch, while Hengrabari, Borbari and part of Panjabari moved to Geetanagar. If your address is in south-east Guwahati, confirm which station covers it rather than relying on an older list.
Cyber matters have a clean answer here. The commissionerate runs its own cyber crime police station at the Commissioner's office, and the state cyber police station at the criminal investigation department headquarters in Ulubari expressly covers all of Assam except the commissionerate area. So a Guwahati victim goes to the city's cyber station, not to the state one. Financial fraud still goes to 1930 and the national portal first. Police station counts for the city differ between sources and the only complete official list we found is several years old, so we publish none.

A sweep reports what was found in the areas examined, with the methods used, at the time of the visit. Finding nothing does not prove nothing was ever there, and no sweep keeps a space clean afterwards. We would rather say that plainly than promise complete detection.

Bug sweeping in Guwahati: common questions
Is North Guwahati covered by Guwahati city police?
No, despite the name. Amingaon, North Guwahati and Changsari sit across the Brahmaputra in Kamrup Rural, a separate district under a superintendent based at Amingaon. The Guwahati commissionerate covers Kamrup Metropolitan district, which does include places that feel rural such as Sonapur, Chandrapur and Azara.
Is there a rural superintendent I can escalate to in Guwahati?
Not inside the city. The commissionerate covers the whole of Kamrup Metropolitan district, so the chain runs officer in charge, assistant commissioner, deputy commissioner for the east, central or west police district, joint commissioner, then the Commissioner of Police. Kamrup Rural is a different district, not a second door for a city matter.
Where do cyber complaints go in Guwahati?
To the commissionerate's own cyber crime police station at the Commissioner's office. The state cyber police station at Ulubari covers all of Assam except the commissionerate area, so it is not the right place for a Guwahati matter. For financial fraud use 1930 and the national portal first.
Which police station covers my address in south east Guwahati?
Worth confirming, because it may have changed. A new station at Kahilipara was ordered in August 2026, taking Odalbakra, Bhagaduttapur and parts of the Fatasil and Lokhra stretch out of Dispur, while Hengrabari, Borbari and part of Panjabari moved to Geetanagar. Older lists will not reflect this.
